Help Me Help You Make the Roads a Safer Place for Cyclists

Story

Hi there,

I am aiming to fundraise money for the Amy Gillett Foundation and I would welcome any contribution, great or small, that you could make to such an incredible foundation.

We all know the tragic story behind the establishment of the Amy Gillett Foundation following the death of Australian elite cyclist Amy Gillett while on a training ride in Germany.

Being a cyclist myself and having lost friends on road in the past, I am passionate about spreading the word that 'A Meter Matters'. I hope to do my best to make the roads a safer place for all by challenging myself to participate in the Amy Gillett Foundation - Share the Road Tour 2014. Between 8-15 November this year, I will be riding from Brisbane to Airlie Beach and stop along the way at schools to educate students on 'A Meter Matters' and what the Amy Gillett Foundation sets out to achieve - Road Safety.

In 2013 there were 14 cyclist deaths on Australian Roads. Unfortunately this number keeps increasing.

This year on 7 April 2014, Queensland welcomed the new 2 year trial laws for both cyclist and motorists - 'A Meter Matters'. I hope to do my best to educate as many people as possible about road cycle safety in anticipation that the 'A Meter Matters' trial laws will become permanent thereafter.

Recently on 11 September 2014 in Brisbane, a young 22 year old student lost her life while riding her bike when she was hit by a truck. The breaking news was devastating to hear and so close to home for me. I didn't know the girl that passed away but in memory of her life lost so tragically I was motivated to register the same day to participate and fundraise for Amy Gillett Foundation - Share the Road Tour 2014.

It would be much appreciated if you could show your support for the Amy Gillett Foundation and make a donation to support such an incredible foundation. The aim of the foundation is to work towards ZERO road deaths for cyclists by 2020. This can only be done by motorist awareness. Lets do what we can to avoid seeing images like this above on our roadways.

Happy & Safe Riding.

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
