Marg's Share the Road Tour

Story

On December 6, 2011, my husband's brother & his wife, David & Heather Churcher, were killed in a single accident, when, on a clear sunny day, on a straight open road they were struck by a truck whilst riding their tandem bicycle on the Mornington Peninsula.

Despite this tragedy, we continue to be very keen bike riders. The freedom, the health benefits, the challenge & the camaraderie constantly draw us back to it. I am also passionate about doing something to contribute to making our roads a much safer place for our most vulnerable of road users. Going out for a ride on a beautiful day should not mean not coming home again, ever.

In 2013 alone, 48 cyclists lost their lives & 9,307 bike riders were seriously injured in Australia.

I am honored to have the opportunity to participate in The Share the Road Tour 2014, to assist in educating our current & next generation of drivers & cyclists to share the road safely, which we will be doing through school & community visits during the Tour.

To be part of a movement that alters the culture & attitudes of Australian road users towards each other is a privilege. To create a culture of respect, tolerance, patience & responsibility between drivers & cyclists will not only have the very real potential of reducing trauma & deaths on our roads, but will also, I believe, have a follow on affect in our society as a whole in the way in which we relate to & treat each other.

I personally invite you to be part of the work that the Amy Gillet Foundation is doing in this area by donating here & sponsoring me in The Share the Road Tour 2014.

I am determined that your donation will make a difference.

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
